Email for Churches and Organizations

IMPORTANT: The provision of email for Mennonite.net customers is changing in 2009!  Email services will be provided through Google Apps.  Customers who have not received information on this migration should contact the .  The following information is provided as a courtesy to customers who have not yet made this migration.

Churches and organizations receive a number of free individual email accounts with their Mennonite.net membership. The number of free accounts depends on membership level.

Member - up to 8 accounts.
Supporting (Technology Co-op) Member - up to 25 accounts

How do I activate my email account?

A member church or organization can activate their free email simply by emailing . New members will be sent a username and password for an administrative account which will allow them to log into their Caravel™ site. Also included will be instructions for the administrator (webmaster) to create additional email accounts and aliases.

How are email accounts created?

Email accounts are now differentiated according to the name of the church or organization. Your site administrator (webmaster) will be able to set up an account for you ("yourname") so that it can be used as follows:

For churches in the US
Short Account Name (within your Caravel site): yourname
Email Username (login to email): yourname.churchname.st.us
Account Email Address: yournamechurchname.st.us.mennonite.net

For churches in Canada
Short Account Name (within your Caravel site): yourname
Email Username (login to email): yourname.churchname.pr.ca
Account Email Address: yournamechurchname.pr.ca.mennonite.net

For organizations
Short Account Name (within your Caravel site): yourname
Email Username(login to email): yourname.
Account Email Address: yournameorganizationname.mennonite.net

What are aliases?

An alias is a name, different from your username, that people can also use to email you. Email sent to the alias is automatically sent to the username’s email account.

Aliases may reflect short convenient versions of a name: mikechurchname.st.us.mennonite.net
Aliases may reflect a role: pastorchurchname.pr.ca.mennonite.net
Aliases may be created using a custom domain name purchased by the organization: officemychurch.org

Adding Aliases to Your Account

Your administrator can add aliases to your account using any domain names owned by the member church or organization through which you have email. Both accounts and their corresponding aliases are created using the Caravel™ Accounts menu under the Tools icon.

Receiving mail sent to an alias–I want email at mynamemychurch.org

Let's see this example: A church purchases the domain name "mychurch.org" and wants the email address "infomychurch.org" to be checked by the church secretary, Penelope Ann Miller. Penelope's account is created as pamiller.church.st.us. The administrator (webmaster) for the church will assign the address "infomychurch.org" as an alias to pamiller.church.st.us. Penelope will only need to check her pamiller.church.st.us account, where she will also receive any email sent to infomychurch.org.

How do I check my email?

Mennonite.net offers email services through a web-based (webmail) email interface. Mennonite.net supports webmail as the official method of checking your mail.  With webmail, we have control over the whole process, including incoming and outgoing servers. In other words, you can check your email from any computer with an Internet connection and browser. Mennonite.net webmail does not require any special setup on your part.  You can log on at webmail.mennonite.net..

However, we work with our customers whenever possible to help you configure your email clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Mozilla Mail, etc. for either POP3 or IMAP protocols.  Most customers use POP3 since it downloads all of your mail onto your local machine where you can read and respond to it.  IMAP works best with high speed connections since it leaves mail on the server until you specifically delete it.

Webmail: webmail.mennonite.net (Simply enter this into your browser.)
POP3: pop.mennonite.net (Incoming server setting for email client.)
IMAP: imap.mennonite.net (Incoming server setting for email client.)

Please note the POP3 and IMAP settings are for incoming mail only.  Normally, you will use the settings provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for your outgoing mail.  However, Mennonite.net does now have an option for outgoing mail.  For the following SMTP setting, you will need to turn on SSL and enter your full username for password authentication.

SMTP: smail.mennonite.net (Outgoing server setting)

What is webmail?

Mennonite.net uses an Open Source program called SquirrelMail to give you access to your email account on the web. You use any browser and go to webmail.mennonite.net and log in with your username and password.

This means that if you are away from home, you don't have to figure out how to configure someone else's computer just to check your mail. Your account is always available.

Changing Your Password

Your Site Aministrator can change your password at any time after you activate your account. Go to the Accounts menu under Tools in Caravel™.
